A Piano Model including Longitudinal String Vibrations

In this paper a mixed-paradigm piano model is presented. The major development is the ability of modeling longitudinal string vibrations. Longitudinal string motion is the reason for the metallic sound of low piano notes, therefore its modeling greatly improves the perceptual quality of synthesized piano sound. In this novel approach the transversal displacement of the string is computed by a f...

Violin bow vibrations.

The modal frequencies and bending mode shapes of a freely supported tapered violin bow are investigated by finite element analysis and direct measurement, with and without tensioned bow hair. Such computations are used with analytic models to model the admittance presented to the stretched bow hairs at the ends of the bow and to the string at the point of contact with the bow. Finite element co...

Perception of longitudinal components in piano string vibrations.

This paper investigates the audibility of longitudinal components in piano string vibrations with listening tests. The recorded fortissimo sounds of two grand and one upright pianos have been resynthesized with and without longitudinal components and used in ABX type listening tests. Results suggest that the longitudinal components are audible up to note C(5). However, a second test seeking the...

Forced Vibrations of a Nonhomogeneous String

We prove existence of vibrations of a nonhomogeneous string under a nonlinear time periodic forcing term in the case in which the forcing frequency avoids resonances with the vibration modes of the string (nonresonant case). The proof relies on a Lyapunov–Schmidt reduction and a Nash–Moser iteration scheme.

The Random Vibrations of a String*

where the qk represent charges, Lik inductances, Rik resistances, Gik reciprocals of capacitance, the Ejk are random e.m.f's**, and primes denote differentiations with respect to time. The theory of such systems of equations, quite carefully examined during the war years in applications to noise in electrical networks, turns out also to be applicable to the various mechanical systems—in particu...
